1 So Cal Athletics - Richardson (CA) Bio

#2 - So Cal Athletics – Richardson

Clawing toward the pinnacle they reached in 2013, the So Cal Athletics land in the No. 2 position overall for the final National Rankings of 2016.  The 4-time PGF National Champions (2010-2013) took a slight detour to 6th in the US Club Rankings in 2014, then climbing to 3rd in 2015, only to take another stride toward the top in 2016.  Throughout this team’s long and illustrious history they have held National and Colorado 4th of July Independence Day titles galore, which seem to be well within reach for a program brimming with talent from 12U, 14U and 16U teams providing the players for the future.  The 2017 class should prove impressive with Maddy Dwyer (Stanford), Hannah Martinez (Arizona), Ryan Denhart (Maryland) and Alyssa Kumiyama (South Carolina) lending their experience to winning tradition in the upcoming year.   In 2016 their overall ranking of No. 2 nationally is a combination of an NPS rank of No. 2 and National Ballot of No. 2 to solidify their prowess at competing at the highest level.

2 Firecrackers - Rico (CA) Bio

#1 - Firecrackers – Tony Rico

Southern California continues to dominate with the Firecrackers – Rico once again grabbing hold of the coveted No. 1 spot in the 2016 US Club Rankings FINAL National Rankings for 18 & Under teams.  Although the team has never been out of the top 5 in any US Club Rankings list, the last time they saw the view from the top was in 2012, after winning the Colorado Fireworks tournament, just missing the PGF National Championship to the So Cal Athletics and placing 5th at the TC/USA Nationals in New York City.  Between 2013 and 2015, they have picked up three runner-up finishes at the Fireworks tournament, as well as two 7th place finishes and a 3rd place finish in the PGF National tournament, and a 3rd, 5th and 1st place finish at TC/USA Nationals.  These great finishes combine with a stellar regional record from 2014 through 2016, as well as a PGF National Championship in 2016, to bring their National Points System Ranking to #1 (which measures on-field performance from 2014-2016).  Adding up to carry 98% of the weight of the Overall Rankings, the NPS rank combines with the National Ballot rank of #1, which is determined by the Top 100 US Club Rankings teams from the previous year via online voting – all this places the Firecrackers – Rico team squarely atop the 2016 rankings.   Winning not only the on-field battle but also the votes of their peers is a tremendous accomplishment -- with only a few players lost to college for the 2017 season, we shall see if it is repeatable with their impressive list 2017 grads, including offensive powers Alexis Allan (Michigan), catcher Mary Iakopo (Oregon) and utility Jenna Kean (Arizona) leading the charge.

3 Corona Angels - Tyson (CA) Bio

#7 - Corona Angels -- Tyson

After a 2014 season for the ages (including a Independence Day championship, TC/USA Nationals Championship and a 2nd place finish in the PGF Nationals), it is tough for a team to continue that dominance.  In 2015, Corona Angels-Tyson slipped to a 9th place finish in the Independence Day event and 5th in PGF  Nationals.  In 2016, once again it looked as though they were poised for a great year by finishing 3rd at the Independence Day, but they slid into a 17th place finish at PGF Nationals, closing with a 3-year NPS that kept them in the Top 10, No. 7 overall.  The National Ballot voters see the Angels thriving, as they were voted to a rank of 5th by their peers.  This may be a reaction to the talent lined up for the 2017 season, filled with future Pac-12ers Camryn Ybarra (Oregon State), Kinsley Washington (UCLA) and Mariah Mazon (Oregon State) looking to make a mark in their senior season, along with 2018 grads Anna Vines (UCLA) and Brenna Smith (Georgia Tech) prepared to do their role.

4 Texas Glory - Shelton (TX) Bio

#10 - Texas Glory – Shelton

Texas Glory is not just the team name, it’s the attitude of the players.  Kevin Shelton has been taking the field with this name and mindset since Christa Williams (the youngest Olympic team gold medalist in 1996) was in the circle.  This storied team had another good showing in 2016, placing 5th in the Fireworks tournament, 2nd in the USSSA Elite Select event and 13th in PGF Nationals, building on 2015 (5th in Fireworks and 7th in TC/USA Nationals) as well as 2014 (Fireworks Championship and 6th place TC/USA Nationals finish).  With a good mix of juniors and senior 2017 grads Maddie MacGrandle (Texas A&M),  Taryn Antoine (Louisiana State) and Brittany Jackson (Kansas), the Glory will be leading the charge with 2018s Audrie LaValley (Oklahoma) and Abby Smith (Texas A&M) watching closely to make their impact a reality.

5 Beverly Bandits - Conroy (IL) Bio

#4 - Beverly Bandits – Conroy

Bill Conroy and Jen Tyrell have been working hard the past three years, climbing the ladder and trying to loosen the grip Southern California teams have had on the US Club Rankings. This year, the Bandits landed at No. 4 overall.  In 2015, the squad looked as though they could make their move by winning the Independence Day event, but came up a little short in finishing 5th at PGF – that placed them in the No. 2 spot behind PGF champion Orange County Batbusters.  In 2016 Jenn Tyrell led the 18U team to 5th at the Independence Day event and 7th at PGF Nationals.  Their three-year NPS combined with their No. 4 peer vote in 2016 keeps them in the top five.  The 2017 graduates for the Bandits, pitchers Alexis Holloway (Notre Dame) Meghan Beaubien (Michigan) and Lauren Rice (Missouri), look to make the race this coming year interesting along with OF Lauren Burke (Oregon) lending a hand in the process.

6 Orange County Batbusters - Haning/Stith (CA) Bio

#3 - Orange County Batbusters – Stith/Haning

Since taking the reins from Gary Haning, Mike Stith has been blazing his own Championship trail, this year finishing at No. 3 for the 2016 FINAL National US Club Rankings.  The Orange County Batbusters held the highest spot in 2015 but had some turnover – this led to a lower-than-normal finish of 33rd at the PFG National Championship, but the squad did win the inaugural USSSA Elite Select event in Kansas City. That combined with their 5th place finish in the Independence Day event to land them at the No. 3 NPS finish for this ranking.  The 2017 season looks promising, with some of the best players in the country hitting their senior stride, including Jocelyn Alo (Oklahoma), Taylon Snow (Auburn) and Briana Perez (UCLA) leading a senior-heavy roster.  Along with a No. 3 Ballot rank from peer voting, it will be worth your time to see what is in store for this perennial powerhouse under the new coaching staff.

7 East Cobb Bullets - Schnute (GA) Bio

#6 - East Cobb Bullets – Schnute

Another Southeast team to be reckoned with is the East Cobb Bullets flagship team coached by Greg Schnute.  In 2016 the Bullets recorded a 3rd place finish in the Independence Day Tournament, a 13th place finish in a tough field at the TC/USA Nationals and walked away with the USA JO Cup Championship close to home in Atlanta. Georgia. This added to their end-of-the-year performance in 2015 of a 2nd place finish in the USA JO Cup and a 3rd place finish in the TC/USA Nationals, while finishing 33rd in a tough single-elim bracket of the Independence Day.  Their NPS balanced out a peer vote rank of 7 to land them in the No. 6 spot overall.  Although they will be attempting to fill the void of pitcher Parker Conrad (Missouri), they seem to be on track with some great 2017 talent including Sydney Hayward (Georgia Tech) and Keara Naploi (Georgia) in the circle, while Nicky Dawson (Louisiana State)and 2018 grad Anna Wagner (Notre Dame) provide defensive support.

8 Wichita Mustangs Gold (KS) Bio

#21 Wichita Mustangs Gold

After taking over for Mark Griggs, Bruce Glatczak is back on track with the Mustangs.  2015 posted a 9th place finish in the IDT and a 4th place finish at the TC/USA Nationals, more than respectable, but the highlight in 2015 was their USA JO Cup Championship.   In 2016 a rough outing in Boulder at the IDT left him with a 65th place finish, although they were able to climb to 5th at the TC/USA Nationals then round off the summer with a 17th place finish at the JO Cup.  We are anxiously awaiting 2017 and the leadership of senior catcher Maura Glatczak (UCONN) and junior outfielder Macy Omli (KU) shaping the Mustangs’ fate.

9 Sorcerers 18 Gold (CA) Bio

#13 Sorcerer Gold

Leading the charge for Nor Cal in 2016 was the Sorcerer Gold program, which has been around for decades.  Their 2014 season helped them gain ground nationally with a 3rd place finish at the Independence Day tournament followed by a 17th place effort at PGF Nationals. In 2015 they were once again in the top 10 in Boulder, finishing 9th, and climbed a bit to 13th at PGF. 2016 showed a 25th place finish in Boulder, but improvement at National PGF did not slow in the least, wrapping up at 7th and keeping them in the top 15 nationally.  The Sorcerer battery of 2017 catcher Lexi Harrington (Arizona) and 2018 pitcher Danielle Williams (Missouri) will have to put their best foot forward to keep the Gold moving forward.

10 Gold Coast Hurricanes - Cooper (FL) Bio

#20 Gold Coast Hurricanes – Cooper

Marty Cooper has an eye for talent and a reputation for having offensive powerhouses.  The Hurricanes proved formidable in this 3-year ranking, starting in 2014 finishing 3rd in both the Fireworks and TC/USA Nationals and closing the year as a top 10 team nationally.  In 2015, 17th place finishes in both the Fireworks and JO Cup lowered them a bit, but again were a top 20 contender.  In 2016, a 25th place finish in the Fireworks looked to be the motivation they needed to fight back with a 5th place finish at TC/USA Nationals followed by a 2nd place finish at the JO Cup.  With 2017 grads like pitcher Lauren Mathis (Georgia), catcher Danielle Romanello (Florida) and shortstop Taylor Bump, never count out the Hurricanes.

#15 Cal Cruisers – Sievers

This So Cal team might be seen as a stranger for this level of success, but they have put in plenty of field time over the recent years.  2014 was status quo with the Cruisers finishing 17th in the Independence Day Tournament and 25th in PGF Nationals. 2015 gave them a slight uptick to 9th in PGF; 2016 started with a 17th place finish in Boulder, but the critical boost came at PGF Nationals, taking 2nd place. 2017 grad Chloe Romero (Texas) will look to dominate in the circle, while 2018 shortstop Jasmine Sievers (Oregon) leads the defense behind her to ideally keep moving up the ladder.

16 TC Stars Gold (CO) Bio

#26 TC Stars Gold

Although they have been around since the mid ‘90s, this Colorado program is finally making a splash.  The TC Stars played their way onto the national stage in 2013 with 5th place finishes in the Super 64 division of the Fireworks and the TC/USA Nationals.  In 2015 they kept moving forward and finished 3rd in the Fireworks Super 64 bracket, but hit a bit of a skid at TC/USA Nationals by finishing 51st.  In a 2016 season that saw the loss of multiple hefty contributors, a 19th place Fireworks finish was followed by a 9th place showing at the TC/USA Nationals and the year ended with a 17th place finish at the JO Cup.  The 2017 season will test this Junior-heavy roster but 2017 grads including pitcher Grace Ladd (Brown University), catcher Emily Taggart (Princeton) and outfielder Tara Shadowen (Colorado State University) will be motivating their team to stay up on the national stage for years to come.

17 Texas Bombers Gold - Smith (TX) Bio

#9 - Texas Bombers Gold – Smith

Deep in the heart of Texas, the stars were shining bright on the No. 9 team in 2016, the Texas Bombers Gold.  Scott Smith will have his work cut out for him this next year to repeat the performance of a Fireworks Championship in 2016 to complement the Bombers’  USSSA Elite Select Nationals 3rd place finish and USA JO Cup finish of 13th.  In 2015 the team started to show their stuff with a 2nd place finish at the TC/USA Nationals in Reno, NV (a marked improvement from 19th in 2014) and 9th place at the Fireworks event, which equaled their 2014 performance in Colorado.  Replacing 10 2016 graduates is no easy task, yet the 2018 athletes on the roster for this year may be up for the challenge - Kayla Garcia (Texas A&M), Haley Nillen (Auburn) and Maddie Lindsey will be leaned on as seniors Ashley Koncir (McNeese) and Shelbi Sunseri (Louisiana State) show them how it is done.  Seeing this organization perform off the field with the honoring of our US Armed Forces members and their families is just as fun as watching them play against other top teams in and out of the Lone Star state.

20 So Cal Choppers - Fausett (CA) Bio

#12 So Cal Choppers - Fausett

Back in the Sunshine State, the So Cal Choppers have some pretty stiff competition but are definitely in the conversation of top teams.  In 2014 a pair of 9th place finishes in both the Independence Day Tournament and PGF Nationals helped tremendously; in 2015 the 9s changed to 17th place twin finishes with a 35th at the TC/USA Nationals as well.  No doubt, 2016 helped propel them back toward the top with a 17th again in the Independence Day Tournament and a stellar 3rd place finish at PGF.  The 3-year on-field mash up, with a peer vote of No. 9, shows their arrow pointed back to the top 10. Odds are, 2017 graduate, Abby Sweet (Notre Dame) along with Cal State Fullerton signees Vanessa Barron and Taylor Dockins will be instrumental in providing the So Cal Choppers the necessary push.

#11 Texas Sudden Impact Gold - Dutton

Rising through the Texas ranks is tough enough, but this team has been getting it done at home and nationally, culminating in a #11 ranking in 2016.  The 2015 campaign thrust them into the national conversation with a run-rule victory over Firecrackers-Rico to win the Fireworks Championship game, followed by 5th in the JO Cup and a 9th place finish in the TC/USA Nationals.  In 2016 they kept building their reputation as a national contender with a 9th place Fireworks finish and a 3rd place finish at the TC/USA Nationals.  Their on-field performance coupled with the No. 15 rank in the peer vote puts them within striking distance of the top 10 – such progress will be helped along by 2017 catcher Kelcy Leach (Texas Tech), pitcher Cali Dolfi (Boston University) and 3B Jolie Readeaux (University of Louisiana- Lafayette).

They may be slightly down but never count them out.  With an outlook of showcasing talent by competing and finishing high in national tournaments, this team is always in the mix.  Having a great year in 2014 with a 5th place in IDT and a 7th place in PGF Nationals, 2015 showed a 33rd place finish at IDT and a 13th place finish at PGF Nationals.  In 2016 they fought back and rose to a 17th place finish at the IDT and had a hard fought 17th in the PGF Nationals as well.  2017 grads like middle infielder Ashleigh Inae (East Carolina), pitcher Yosenia Morrison (Grand Canyon) catcher Summer Hargett (Northwestern) and shortstop Alyssa Martinez (Ole Miss) will want to lead the Explosion back into the top 10 this summer season.

#24 Aces Express – McCorkle

Dave McCorkle is coaching a team on the rise taking steps higher to the pinnacle year after year.  In 2015 they finished 9th in the Super 64 at the Fireworks then in 2016 improved to 3rd in the Super bracket.  Also in 2016 they improved to a 13th place finished in the TC/USA Nationals from 18th the previous year.  They caught an edge from a 2015 JO Cup finish of 7th to a 2016 finish of 17th but it looks like it will not break their stride to the top.  With college commits across his roster, they will be a force this year with 2017 grads pitcher Casey Davis (Louisiana Lafayette), shortstop Janae Jefferson (University of Texas) and catcher Dani Elder (Texas A&M) pushing the Aces hard to improve yet again this season.

The USA Athletics has a long history in So Cal, and are now becoming a threat nationally as well as locally.  In 2015 their 17th place finish in the IDT, 17th place in the TC/USA Nationals and 25th place in the PGF National were good, but their performance in 2016 starting with a 5th place IDT finish and a 2nd place PGF Platinum bracket finish showed a glimpse of their potential.  The 2017 class will keep chipping away, including catcher Alyssa Palacios (University of Utah), pitcher Hannah Johnson (Cal State Fullerton) and outfielder Allie Englant (Ohio University) putting in their final season push to help the Athletics keep improving.

#19 Firecrackers AZ – Kaye

Arizona earns a spot on the softball map thanks to teams like the Firecrackers, coached by Randy Kaye.  In 2014, finishing 25th at the Fireworks and 11th at the TC/USA Nationals started them on a path toward the top 20, and in 2015 a 33rd place finish in Colorado at the Fireworks and another 11th in TC/USA Nationals helped solidify the fact they belonged on the field against top talent.  In 2016 the team jelled and worked its way to a 2nd place finish at the Fireworks in a grueling bracket, and they capped the year with a 25th place finish at PGF.   They seem comfortable in the top 20 but want to move onward and upward – 2017 grad Bella Loomis (Arizona State) will lead from the middle infield and the plate while 2018 pitchers Jess Lynch (Utah) and Myka Sutherlin (University of Pacific) keep the team on track.

#5 - Birmingham Thunderbolts

“Walk Softly and Carry a Big Stick” should be the Thunderbolts motto, as this Southeast team quietly creates a splash whenever they go head-to-head against the usual suspects in the west, this year landing them at No. 5 overall, up one spot from the 2015 FINAL US Club Rankings.  Helping them break into the top 5 were 3rd place finishes in both 2015 and 2016 PGF Nationals, as well as a 9th place finish in the Independence Day tournaments in 2015 and 2016.  Combining their No. 5 rank in NPS with their peers voting them No. 6 helps the Thunderbolts continue to affirm their stretch of excellent play.   In 2017, this team will be loaded with talented seniors feeding the SEC, Big XII and Pac-12 conferences, including Mia Davidson (Mississippi State) behind the plate, utility player Shaye Bowden (Oregon) and shortstop Mary Katherine Tedder (Texas). It will be fun to watch this team create more waves against national competition.

This Oregon team is the top dog in the Northwest, showing consistent success over the past 3 years on the field. Their 2014 season had them 33rd in the Independence Day and 49th at PGF. In 2015 they improved to 17th in Boulder, but they were thrust onto the national stage with a championship run in Reno, NV at the TC/USA Nationals.  In 2016, the Bullets added a 17th place finish in Boulder and a PGF finish of 33rd to their growing resume’.  Their 2017 pitching duo of Pat Moore (DePaul) and Jessica Seely (Sacramento State) will lead the team, which is heavy with 2018 grads - including infielder Hannah Galey (Oregon) – all trying to better their 2016 national finish.

#18 Louisville Lady Sluggers – Dobina

“Sluggers” is not just their name, it is what they do. This hard-hitting team has been getting closer and closer to the pinnacle every year.  In 2014 they took 5th in the Fireworks and 10th in TC/USA Nationals, then in 2015 they repeated their 5th place effort in Colorado, then 9th at the JO Cup.  In 2016 a 37th place finish at the Fireworks looked bleak, but the bats came alive at the TC/USA Nationals, propelling them to a 2nd place finish in a good old-fashioned slugfest in New York.  2017 grads catcher Kendall Smith (Western Kentucky) and outfielder Kaylee Tow (Alabama) will be charged with keeping their team swinging for the fences and pushing them to the top of the pile.

Triple Crown Sports and US Club Rankings join a mourning softball community and offers condolences to the Louisville Lady Sluggers and the Dobina family for the untimely passing of Don Dobina.  His knowledge and contributions to the sport of fastpitch and to the young players he coached will be profoundly missed.

#8 - Texas Blaze Gold – Slimp

Climbing 11 spots between 2015 and 2016 places Texas Blaze Gold at No. 8 overall; staying there will be the test and is arguably the difference between good teams and great teams.  With amazing contributions from a 2016 graduate-laden team, the Blaze finished 2nd at the Independence Day tournament (5th in 2015 and 17th in 2014), took the Championship home from the TC/USA Nationals (finished 26th in 2015 and 41st in 2014) and finished 9th at PGF Nationals (improving upon their 2014 finish of 65th).  The 2016 grads are leaving a good sized void that will need to be filled in order for the Blaze to continue on the upward path; 2017 graduate Taylor Ellsworth (Texas) will take control behind the plate while relying on younger players like 2018 Madi Jatzlau (Texas A&M) and 2019 Rylee Trlicek (Florida) to be quick studies to keep the team playing at the high level they did in 2016.

This Houston team embodies the tenacity their name implies.  Steadily on the rise since 2014, finishing 30th in the Fireworks event and 13th at PGF, in 2015 they posted a 49th place finish in the Fireworks and a JO Cup finish of 9th.  In true bold, Texas fashion they jumped up in 2016 to a 5th place finish in the Fireworks and a 5th place finish in the JO Cup.  With 2017 grads like pitchers Ariana Adams (Texas) and Tierrah Williams (Houston) leading the way and CJ Landrum (2018 Georgia) hot on their heels, it will be fun to see the fight in the Dawgs this year.

#22 Lady Lightning Gold – Corn

Just like the SEC and its presence on the NCAA softball stage, the Southeast has a lot of talent to offer at the 18 & under level – John Corn and the Lady Lightning are contributing to the profile of the region.  Their 33rd place finishes in the IDT in 2015 and 2016 were followed by PGF Nationals finishes of 17th and 13th as well as TC/USA National performances of 10th and 3rd, showing very well at National Championship events.  With a plethora of NCAA DI mid-major talent, 2017 grads shortstop Chandley Garner (NC State), pitcher Whitney Sanford (East Carolina) and catcher Anna Epling (East Carolina) will be leading the charge to again show they cannot be overlooked.

#27 Texas Glory Adkins

No doubt the Texas Glory Adkins team has talent, and they are climbing up the ranks every year.  In 2015 a huge leap forward in their program was made with a 5th place finish at the Fireworks Super 64, an 11th place finish at the TC/USA Nationals, then rounding it out with a PGF Nationals finish of 33rd.  In 2016 another step towards the top came with a Fireworks Super 48 finish of 9th, a PGF finish of 17th and a 4th place finish at the USSSA Elite Select National tournament.  As they head towards the top 25 their 2017 grads like shortstop Brooke Makemson (LA Tech), pitcher Sierra Lange (George Washington) and outfielder Marisa Arriaga (Texas Women’s) will have to lead their team and navigate some tough brackets ahead.

#28 St. Louis Chaos – Beatty

Although Evan Beatty is no longer coaching, the Chaos has a proud history and is a program that holds a lot of talented players.  The team taking the top 18U Gold spot will have their work cut out following a team that finished 17th in the IDT and 3rd in the JO Cup in 2015, then in 2016 finished 9th in the IDT and 7th in the JO Cup.  Players like Olivia Ward (University of Kentucky),  Kaylee Anderson (Southeast Missouri) and Caitlyn Bingham (Wichita State) will have to get up to speed quickly to keep the team moving through the ranks this season.
